What is the Preeti Font?
Preeti is one of the most popular traditional Hindi (Devanagari) fonts used across India and Nepal. Like KrutiDev, it uses an ASCII-based encoding where ordinary keyboard characters are mapped to Hindi glyphs. The same document appears as meaningless English characters without the Preeti font installed.
Preeti vs KrutiDev — Key Differences
While both fonts share much of their mapping, there are important distinctions:
- In Preeti, the key
fproduces the ि (i-matra), whereas in KrutiDev the key;does. - In Preeti, the key
;produces य (ya), whereas in KrutiDev the keyZdoes. - Preeti uses
%for ः (visarga) and¡for ँ (chandrabindu).
Why Convert to Unicode?
Unicode Devanagari text is universally supported — websites, phone messages, government portals, and apps all work with Unicode without any special font installed. Preeti-encoded documents only display correctly on machines with the Preeti font installed.
